The Bloomsbury – The Doyle Collection
london, england
Set the stage for your next getaway with the creative flair and old-London charm of this Doyle Collection hotel
Originally designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, this 1928 Grade II listed building’s extensive restoration was inspired by the style of the Bloomsbury Set’s iconic members, such as Virginia Woolf and EM Forster. The hideaway lies in the heart of the literary group’s old neighbourhood, just moments from the many delights of Covent Garden, Soho, Theatreland and Oxford Street.
When it comes to in-house dining, guests are spoiled for choice. The quintessentially English Dalloway Terrace is celebrated for its delectable afternoon tea, while the Martin Brudnizki-designed Coral Room, a grand salon bar, is a vibrant hot spot with a refined feel. The intimate Bloomsbury Club Bar, whose finely crafted cocktails are inspired by the colourful lives of the 1930s Bloomsbury Set, completes the selection.
Located on the first floor, the Seamus Heaney Library is an intimate, book-lined space named after the Nobel Prize-winning Irish poet and playwright, who was a regular visitor to The Bloomsbury. The legendary writer personally opened the refurbished room in July 2011, and several treasures he gifted to the hotel adorn its walls, including a handwritten note to the hotel team.
The Bloomsbury’s beautiful suites blend contemporary decor with period interiors, following a rich, regal palette that pairs perfectly with the solid-wood furniture and velvet-upholstered armchairs. The result is a light-filled space with an opulent feel, most notably in the Italian marble bathrooms, which feature freestanding roll-top baths, separate showers and double marble-topped vanity units. Throughout, the property evokes a sense of glamour while remaining emphatically rooted in the present.
